AFFILIATES

STAR Affiliates are partners who are aligned with STAR’s strategies for increasing conservation adoption and are using the STAR tool and framework to amplify conservation efforts with farmers and ranchers in their states and regions. STAR Affiliates recognize, inspire, guide and reward agricultural producers for conservation practice adoption and implementation at scale.

Through adaptation of the STAR Framework, STAR Affiliates provide a simple, straightforward, and flexible roadmap that guides producers toward maximizing ecosystem services and agricultural system resilience while connecting them to needed technical support and financial incentives.

ESTABLISHED STATES

ILLINOIS

llinois STAR was developed in 2017 by two local farmers who teamed up with the Champaign County Soil and Water Conservation District (CCSWCD) to formally establish STAR across Illinois and eventually inspire a national expansion.

COLORADO

As a STAR affiliate, Colorado utilizes the STAR field evaluation framework to assess where producers are on their soil health journey. Producers fill out a field evaluation form, choosing from 11 different cropping systems and grazing lands.

STAR launched in Washington in 2023 as part of the ongoing work of the Washington Soil Health Initiative (WaSHI). WaSHI, a tri-agency partnership between the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA).

DEVELOPING STATES

IOWA

Iowa STAR is led by the Conservation Districts of Iowa and was established to assist farm operators and landowners in evaluating their nutrient and soil management practices on individual fields. The ultimate objective of Iowa STAR is to meet the goals of the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy (NRS).

In June of 2023 the Missouri Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (MASWCD) signed on as a partner for the Missouri Climate-Resilient Crop & Livestock (CRCL) Project administered by the University of Missouri Center for Regenerative Agriculture.

New Mexico STAR was officially established with the New Mexico Association of Conservation Districts (NMACD) as the lead Affiliate in October 2024. Those partners have been working together since January 2024 with the goal to help implement soil health practices and principles across New Mexico.
